USAA's process

How does a USAA hail claim work?

1. Report

USAA says the fastest way is My Claims Center or the USAA app.

2. Inspect

USAA says it takes about 10 business days to finish its inspection report.

3. Pay

After it approves the estimate, USAA says payment usually goes out within 2 business days, and to expect about 3 weeks to a first payment overall.

4. Repair

You pick the contractor. Upload the final invoice when the work is done.

Recoverable depreciation ("holdback")

USAA describes it as the gap between the cost to replace and the actual cash value. With replacement coverage you can recover it after the work is complete, with proof.

In plain EnglishThe first check is light on purpose. The rest comes after the roof is on and the invoice is in.

Supplement

USAA says the first payment might not be the only one; added costs can be recovered through a supplement.

In plain EnglishIf we find rotted decking or code items during tear-off, we document it and send it in before we keep going.

Deductibles

What is my USAA wind/hail deductible?

Percentage deductible

USAA calculates a percentage deductible from your dwelling limit, not the claim amount. If your rebuild value changes, so does the deductible.

In plain English2% of a $450,000 dwelling limit is $9,000 out of pocket before USAA pays. Check the number in the app before you file.

Multiple deductibles

USAA says some policies have a separate deductible for wind and hail and another for other perils.

In plain EnglishYour "normal" deductible may not be your hail deductible.

Source: USAA

Who you pay the deductible to

USAA subtracts the deductible from the first claim payment, and you pay it to the contractor who does the repairs.

In plain EnglishThe deductible is always your part of the bill.

The deductible is yours

Since SB 12-038 (2012), Colorado law says a roofer working on an insurance claim can't advertise or promise to pay, waive or rebate any part of your deductible. If one does, your insurer doesn't have to consider that roofer's estimate.

In plain EnglishNo roofer can legally "cover" or "eat" your deductible. If someone offers, walk away. It can sink your claim.

Military homeowners

Deployed, TDY or PCSing during a claim?

Colorado Springs and El Paso County are home to a lot of military families, and hail doesn't wait for orders. If you're away, we can photo-document the roof, send you the report, and coordinate access with whoever you trust at the house. You or someone you authorize with USAA stays in charge of the claim.

USAA also says your policy covers reasonable repair costs whether you use a USAA-preferred contractor or your own (USAA hail guidance).

Preferred contractor

A contractor in USAA's network. Using one is optional.

In plain EnglishYou can hire the local roofer you trust. Your coverage doesn't change.

4. Appraisal if it's about the amount

How roof appraisal works.

Right to cancel after a denial

Colorado lets you rescind a roofing contract paid from insurance within 72 hours of written notice that the claim was denied in whole or part.

In plain EnglishA denial never traps you with a roofer.

Colorado rulings & rules

What have Colorado courts and regulators said?

Appraisal can include causation

In BonBeck Parker v. Travelers (10th Cir. 2021), applying Colorado law, the court held that "amount of loss" in that policy's appraisal clause includes causation disputes, so appraisers could decide whether hail caused the disputed roof damage.

In plain English"It's wear and tear, not hail" may still be an appraisal question. It depends on your policy's wording.

Matching

In Bertisen v. Travelers (D. Colo. Sept. 8, 2023), a federal judge read an ambiguous policy in the homeowners' favor and held that it covered matching on a concrete tile roof.

In plain EnglishA patch that doesn't match isn't automatically the final answer. That was one ruling on one policy.

Aerial photos and nonrenewals

DOI Bulletin B-5.57 (effective March 16, 2026) says aerial imagery shouldn't be the sole basis for adverse actions such as nonrenewals or claim reductions. Separately, C.R.S. 10-4-110.7 requires 60 days' mailed notice, with reasons, before a homeowners nonrenewal.

In plain EnglishA satellite picture alone shouldn't cost you your policy, and you get two months' written notice. What to do.
