Before you file
Free State Farm policy check. Know your number first.
State Farm claims in Colorado often turn on two things: a percentage wind/hail deductible and how many slopes the adjuster counts. Know both before you file, or before you accept a partial.

What we check with you
- Your wind/hail deductible in dollars
- Replacement cost or ACV on the roof
- Metal cosmetic exclusion, if any
- A slope-by-slope photo inspection
Your number
What will State Farm actually pay on my roof?
Separate wind/hail deductible
State Farm says Colorado policies cover wind and hail damage but can carry a separate Windstorm or Hail Deductible endorsement. The deductible amount is shown as a percentage.

Replacement cost vs. actual cash value (ACV)
On a replacement-cost policy the first check is usually the depreciated amount; the held-back depreciation is paid after the work is done. On an ACV roof, depreciation is never paid back.

The deductible is yours
Since SB 12-038 (2012), Colorado law says a roofer working on an insurance claim can't advertise or promise to pay, waive or rebate any part of your deductible. If one does, your insurer doesn't have to consider that roofer's estimate.

Metal roofs
Does State Farm exclude hail dents on metal roofs?
"Exclusion of Cosmetic Loss to Metal Roof Covering Caused by Hail"
To get State Farm's premium discount for qualifying impact-resistant metal roofing, the policyholder must sign this endorsement. State Farm says it's your choice whether to request the discount.

Cosmetic vs. functional damage
Cosmetic means the surface looks damaged but still keeps water out. Functional damage affects how the roof works or how long it lasts.
Denied or partial
State Farm denied my roof or paid for one slope. Now what?
1. Get the denial in writing
The Colorado DOI says to get a written letter with the reason and the exact policy language the insurer is relying on (DOI advisory).
2. Get your full policy
Colorado insurers must make your policy and endorsements available within 3 business days of a request (C.R.S. 10-4-110.8).
3. Document every slope
Test squares, chalked hits, soft metals, vents, gutters and interior stains, all photographed and dated.
4. Ask for a re-inspection, then consider appraisal
Most homeowners policies have an appraisal clause for disputes over the amount of loss. Read yours. How appraisal works.
Partial-slope (repair) approval
The adjuster approves shingles on one or two slopes instead of the whole roof.
Supplement
A request for more money after the first estimate, for damage or code items found during the work.

Appraisal
A policy process where you and the insurer each pick an appraiser and an umpire settles the amount of loss if they disagree.
Rescinding your roofing contract after a denial
If your claim is denied in whole or in part, Colorado lets you cancel a roofing contract paid from insurance within 72 hours of the insurer's written notice.

How Homey helps
What does Homey do on a State Farm claim?
We inspect and photograph every slope, read your declarations page with you, meet the adjuster on site, and document what was missed. If the number is still wrong, we explain your options under your policy, including appraisal. We're a roofing contractor, not a public adjuster, and we never touch your deductible.
Takeaways
- Know your wind/hail deductible in dollars before you file.
- Metal roof discount = possible cosmetic exclusion.
- Denials need a written reason and policy language.
- Partial approvals get fixed with slope-by-slope proof.
Colorado rulings & rules
What have Colorado courts and regulators said?
Appraisal can include causation
In BonBeck Parker v. Travelers (10th Cir. 2021), applying Colorado law, the court held that "amount of loss" in that policy's appraisal clause includes causation disputes, so appraisers could decide whether hail caused the disputed roof damage.

Matching
In Bertisen v. Travelers (D. Colo. Sept. 8, 2023), a federal judge read an ambiguous policy in the homeowners' favor and held that it covered matching on a concrete tile roof.

Aerial photos and nonrenewals
DOI Bulletin B-5.57 (effective March 16, 2026) says aerial imagery shouldn't be the sole basis for adverse actions such as nonrenewals or claim reductions. Separately, C.R.S. 10-4-110.7 requires 60 days' mailed notice, with reasons, before a homeowners nonrenewal.

Does State Farm cover hail damage to roofs in Colorado?
State Farm says wind and hail damage is covered on its Colorado property policies, but a separate wind/hail deductible endorsement can apply. Your declarations page shows your deductible and any endorsements.
Why did State Farm only pay for part of my roof?
Usually because the adjuster found qualifying damage on only some slopes. Slope-by-slope photo documentation, a re-inspection request and, if needed, appraisal are the usual next steps.
Does State Farm exclude cosmetic hail damage on metal roofs?
If you took State Farm's discount for qualifying impact-resistant metal roofing, you signed the Exclusion of Cosmetic Loss to Metal Roof Covering Caused by Hail endorsement. Not every policy has it.
Can a roofer pay my State Farm deductible?
No. Colorado law (C.R.S. 6-22-105, from SB 12-038) bars roofers from advertising or promising to pay, waive or rebate your deductible.
How do I get a copy of my State Farm policy?
Ask State Farm in writing. Colorado law requires insurers to make the policy available within 3 business days of a request.
Is Homey a public adjuster?
No. Homey is a roofing contractor. We document damage and discuss the scope of repairs with your insurer when you hire us, which Colorado law allows.
