Colorado rulings
What have courts said about appraisal and matching?
BonBeck Parker v. Travelers (10th Cir. 2021)
Applying Colorado law, the federal appeals court held that "amount of loss" in that policy's appraisal clause unambiguously includes causation disputes, so appraisers could decide whether hail caused the disputed roof damage. It affirmed judgment that Travelers breached the appraisal provision by refusing appraisal unless causation was carved out.

Bertisen v. Travelers (D. Colo. 2023)
On a concrete tile roof, a federal judge found the policy ambiguous on whether it required matching and read it in the homeowners' favor, granting partial summary judgment that the policy covered matching.

Right to cancel after a denial
You can rescind a roofing contract paid from insurance within 72 hours of written notice the claim was denied in whole or part.

Where Homey fits
What does Homey do in each?
We're a roofing contractor, not a public adjuster. We document the roof, write the repair scope and, once you hire us, discuss that scope with your insurer, which Colorado law allows. On a supplement, we write and document it. In appraisal, we can provide photos, measurements and a line-item scope to whoever you hire as your appraiser.
Takeaways
- Missing items: supplement.
- Wrong number: appraisal.
- Causation fight: appraisal may apply (BonBeck), depending on wording.
- No coverage: get the denial in writing.

What is the difference between a supplement and appraisal?
A supplement adds documented damage or code items to the estimate. Appraisal resolves a disagreement over the amount of loss through appraisers and an umpire.
Can appraisal decide whether hail caused the damage in Colorado?
In BonBeck Parker v. Travelers (10th Cir. 2021), applying Colorado law, the court held that "amount of loss" in that policy's appraisal clause included causation. Results depend on your policy wording.
Does my policy have to pay for matching shingles or tile?
It depends on the wording. In Bertisen v. Travelers (D. Colo. 2023), a federal judge read an ambiguous policy to require matching on a tile roof.
Is Homey a public adjuster?
No. Homey is a roofing contractor.
