Why gutters matter more here

A Colorado gutter handles more than rain.

Your gutters catch roof runoff and move it away from the foundation, the siding and the window wells. On the Front Range they also deal with spring snow that melts and refreezes at the eaves, shingle granules after a hailstorm, and summer cloudbursts that can overflow an undersized run fast.

The gutter has to work with the roof edge. Front Range re-roof rules require a drip edge at the eaves of shingle roofs (Pikes Peak Regional Building, Thornton, Erie, Fort Collins, Golden and Castle Pines all call it out), and the gutter should sit under it so water can’t run behind into the fascia. That’s why gutters installed with a new roof usually perform better than gutters hung on an old edge.

On a hail claim, gutters, downspouts and window screens are the “soft metal” adjusters look at first. Dents there are a sign the roof took hits too. (See how to check for hail from the ground.)

Signs you need it

What to look for from the ground.

You don’t need a ladder. If you see any of these, a free inspection will tell you what it means.

Dents and dings

Round dents along the face or top lip after a storm, usually hail. Even if they still drain, the dents are documentation.

Overflow in heavy rain

Water spilling over the front means a clog, a bad pitch, or a gutter too small for the roof area feeding it.

Pulling away from the fascia

Loose hangers, sagging runs or gaps behind the gutter. Often the fascia board behind it is soft.

Leaking seams and corners

Drips at joints, end caps and outlets. Sectional gutters have a seam every few feet; seamless runs only at corners and outlets.

Stains, peeling paint or rot behind

Streaks on the siding, peeling fascia paint, or soft wood mean water is getting behind the gutter.

Ice and pooling at the foundation

Ice ridges at the eaves in winter, or water pooling by the foundation and window wells, point to downspout and pitch problems.

Materials and options

What we install, and why.

No brand pitch. These are the trade-offs we walk you through at the inspection.

Seamless aluminum K-style

The Front Range standard. Formed on site from a coil to the exact length of each run, so the only seams are at corners and outlets. Wide color choice to match trim.

5-inch vs 6-inch

5-inch fits most homes. Large or steep roof planes, long runs and valleys that dump into one corner are where 6-inch gutters and bigger downspouts earn their keep. We size from the roof area and pitch, not habit.

Downspouts and extensions

More or bigger downspouts often fix overflow better than bigger gutters. Extensions carry water away from the foundation.

Gutter guards

Useful under trees and on hard-to-reach second stories. They reduce cleaning; they don’t eliminate it. We’ll tell you if your house actually needs them.

Heavier gauge

Thicker aluminum resists dents and ladder damage better. Worth discussing if your last gutters dented easily.

Fascia and drip edge

Rotten fascia is replaced before a gutter goes on. On a re-roof, drip edge is installed first so the gutter tucks under it.

Colorado hail & insurance

Hail, insurance and gutters in Colorado

Dented gutters are commonly part of a hail claim. When we inspect, we photograph the gutters, downspouts, screens and other soft metal on every side of the house in CompanyCam, next to the roof photos, so the adjuster sees the whole picture, not just the shingles.

“Cosmetic” matters. Some Colorado policies exclude cosmetic damage to metal, so a dent that still drains may not be covered. Our cosmetic exclusion guide explains how it works.

When gutters come off for a roof, that belongs on the estimate. Gutters that must be detached and reset for a new roof, or replaced because they’re damaged, are part of the scope. Gutters, downspouts and paint are among the items we see left off first estimates most often.

On one Homey claim, documenting the gutters, downspouts, exterior paint and solar reset with the roof took it from $2,281 to $58,171 (shared with the homeowner’s permission). Your insurer decides coverage; we document. See denied and low claims.

We’re roofers, not public adjusters.Colorado law limits what a roofer can do on your claim (C.R.S. 6-22-105). We inspect, document, meet your adjuster as your contractor, and send supplements with evidence. Your insurer decides coverage.

What homeowners complain about

The gutter complaints we hear most.

We read local reviews, Reddit threads and news stories about Front Range contractors. These complaints came up again and again. Here’s how we handle each one.

“The roofer blamed the gutter guy, and the gutter guy blamed the roofer.”

How we handle it

Roof, gutters, siding, windows and paint can all run through one Homey contract, so the edges where trades meet get done once, by people talking to each other.

“Half the damage never made it onto the insurance estimate.”

How we handle it

We photograph every elevation in CompanyCam, and you get a copy of every photo we send your insurer. Your insurer decides coverage; we make sure they see the documented damage.

“They promised to cover my deductible, then billed me for it later.”

How we handle it

That promise is illegal in Colorado: roofers can’t pay, waive or rebate a deductible (C.R.S. 6-22-105). Your deductible is yours, and we say so in writing.

How it works

Our gutters process, step by step.

One local team from start to finish. Photos from every stage go in your job file in CompanyCam.

Free inspection

We check the roof edge, fascia, gutters, downspouts and drainage, and photograph every dent.

Sizing and plan

We size runs and downspouts from your roof planes, and match the color to your trim.

Roof edge first

Soft fascia is replaced and drip edge set. On a re-roof, gutters go on after the roof edge is done.

Form on site and hang

Seamless runs formed to length, hung on hidden hangers, pitched to the outlets, corners sealed.

Water test

We run water through every run and downspout and check where it discharges.

Photos and warranty

Finished photos go in your job file, and the 2-year workmanship warranty is in writing.

What affects the price

What changes a gutters quote.

We don’t post made-up price ranges. You get a written, line-item price after a free inspection. Retail jobs can be financed through Slice, if approved.

  • Linear feet of gutter and the number of downspouts
  • Gutter size (5-inch or 6-inch) and metal gauge
  • Number of corners, stories and hard-to-reach runs
  • Fascia or soffit repair found once the old gutters come off
  • Gutter guards, if you want them
  • Whether it’s part of a roof job or insurance claim (detach and reset, or replacement on the claim)

Paying with insurance? You usually pay your deductible plus any upgrades you choose. See the cost guide.

Codes, permits & HOAs

Local rules we check before we order.

Rules change by city and by neighborhood. These come up most on gutters jobs.

  • Drip edge is required at eaves and rakes of shingle roofs across the Front Range, including Pikes Peak Regional Building Department jurisdictions (Colorado Springs, Fountain, Monument, Woodland Park).
  • HOAs commonly control gutter color along with roof color. In Highlands Ranch, exterior changes go through HRCA Covenants & Improvements; see our HOA approval guide.
  • Colorado allows up to two rain barrels per household, filled only from rooftop downspouts (CSU Extension). Tell us if you want an outlet placed for one.

Gutters FAQ

What homeowners ask us.

Text a photo to (720) 948-5726 and we’ll tell you what we see.

Should I replace my gutters when I replace my roof?

Often, yes. The gutter has to come off or be worked around to install the new drip edge anyway. If your gutters are dented, undersized or near the end of their life, replacing them with the roof means the edge and gutter are set together. If they’re in good shape, we can detach and reset them.

How do I know if my gutters need to be replaced?

Look for dents, sagging, gaps behind the gutter, leaking seams, overflow in heavy rain, stains or peeling paint behind the gutter, and ice ridges at the eaves. One leaking corner is a repair; dents along most runs, rot behind them or chronic overflow usually mean replacement.

Does homeowners insurance cover hail-damaged gutters?

Hail damage to gutters is commonly part of a covered hail claim, minus your deductible, but every policy is different, and some exclude cosmetic damage to metal. We document the dents with photos; your insurer decides coverage.

Are seamless gutters worth it?

For most Colorado homes, yes. Seamless gutters are formed to the length of each run, so the only seams are at corners and outlets, where leaks usually start. They also look cleaner.

What size gutters do I need?

Most homes do fine with 5-inch gutters. Large or steep roof planes, valleys that dump into one corner, and long runs may need 6-inch gutters or extra downspouts. We size from the roof, not a rule of thumb.

How much does gutter replacement cost?

It depends on linear footage, size, number of downspouts and corners, stories, and any fascia repair. We give you a written, line-item price after a free inspection. On a hail claim, gutters are typically on the claim estimate. Retail jobs can be financed through Slice, if approved.

How often should gutters be cleaned in Colorado?

At least once a year, and twice if you have trees over the roof. Check them after a hailstorm too, since granules and debris pile up in the runs.
